Excerpts from ARHS Bulletin 1988
When the line was first mooted there were grandiose schemes for a vibrant sugar industry centred at Alton Downs, where an early mill named Pandora once crushed output from nearby cane farms. This was relatively short line, established in 1916 carrying a mixture goods and passenger trains. Because of the shortness of the line a service of one train in the morning and another in the afternoon was possible. Despite inroads by road transport in the late 1940's , this rail line maintained regular service. Interruption was occasionally caused by flood waters. That the line lasted as long as it did is somewhat of a miracle. The branch was never a financial success. After almost 40 years the line closed for good beyond Carrick's siding June 1955. Apart from the need to convey logs to the sawmill and stock at show time shunts continued to operate but ceased in 1968 when the short stub from Alton Downs was closed to business.
