Alton Downs is located some 20 kilometres north west of Rockhampton close to the Tropic of Capricorn. It comprises of well drained undulating downs of black soil interspersed with small basalt outcrops and lightly timbered schlerophyl forests. It is bounded to the north by the Fitzroy River. The district does not enjoy the rainfall of its tropical location, and struggles for water.Winters are predominantly cold and dry while summers are hot with intermittent good rainfall.

The river's southern bank has moved north some 70 to 100 metres since agriculture in the region. Locals claim floods and barrages have caused this. The river was salt water well up stream and many fisherman made a living catching Barramundi and Crabs. Crocodiles were never a problem as they were not protected at the time.

Many Coolibahs are now growing on the southern banks of the river, a result of the 1954 flood. Seeds were washed down stream. A view of the river from the main road is now almost impossible Stock would be driven from South Yaamba via the crossing and taken to Rockhampton. Very few avail themselves of this crossing today or the waterholes that were once popular.
